Dr. Denise O'Meara is a Lecturer in the Department of Science at South East Technological University (SETU), affiliated with the Eco Innovation Research Centre and the Molecular Ecology Research Group (MERG). She holds a PhD in Molecular Ecology (SETU, 2015) and a BSc Hons in Applied Ecology (University College Cork, 2008). Her research focuses on applying DNA techniques to biodiversity monitoring, conservation, and environmental/animal health, aligning with UN Sustainable Development Goals. She has been a faculty member since 2015 and has produced over 43 research outputs, including peer-reviewed articles, commissioned reports, and media contributions.
Her expertise spans molecular ecology, entomology, and conservation genetics. Recent work includes studies on Culicoides midges, red squirrels, and invasive species management. She has been recognized with the 'Highly Commended Early Career Researcher' award (2019) and a 2025 nomination for an established researcher award at SETU. Dr. O'Meara collaborates internationally, contributing to biodiversity forums and media discussions on ecological topics.
Her research highlights include DNA barcoding for species identification, genetic analyses of invasive species, and non-invasive genetic monitoring of wildlife populations. She actively engages in public outreach, co-launching a biodiversity and sustainability forum at SETU (2024).
