Denise Naniche is a researcher at ISGlobal, specializing in infectious diseases with a focus on HIV in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). She has over two decades of experience leading research projects, supervising PhD and Master’s students, and teaching vaccinology in the ISGlobal Master of Global Health program.
- Education: PhD in Immunology (1993, Université Claude Bernard, Lyon, France), Master in Public Health/Epidemiology (San Diego State University)
Her research addresses challenges in HIV diagnosis, treatment, and control in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly Mozambique. She develops diagnostic algorithms for acute HIV infection and antiretroviral treatment failure, and evaluates policies to streamline the HIV care cascade from testing to viral suppression. Recent work explores the gut microbiome’s role in HIV progression and optimizing retention in care through mixed-methods approaches.
Her publications highlight interdisciplinary studies combining clinical immunology, epidemiology, and public health interventions in resource-limited environments. Key trends include innovations in HIV diagnostics, strategies to improve health systems, and microbiome research in acute infection settings.
Denise has supervised numerous students and collaborated with institutions in France, California, and Mozambique. She previously worked on measles immunology and HIV antibody neutralization at the Centre d’Immunologie de Marseille Luminy and Scripps Research Institute before joining ISGlobal in 2004.
