Dr. Denise Curlee is an Assistant Professor and Director of Clinical Internships in the Mental Health Counseling Program at Wegmans School of Nursing, St. John Fisher College. She holds a Ph.D. in Counseling & Counselor Education from the University of Rochester (2024), an M.S. in Mental Health Counseling from St. John Fisher College (2013), and a B.S. in Psychology from Nazareth University. Her expertise includes forensic counseling, trauma-informed care, and addressing systemic barriers for marginalized communities. Certified as an LMHC since 2013 and an EMDR-T candidate, she specializes in treating domestic violence perpetrators and sex offenders using evidence-based practices like Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR).
Her research focuses on human sexuality, social diversity, and resilience in vulnerable populations. With 13+ years of teaching experience, she integrates her first-generation, rural poverty upbringing and queer identity into advocacy for equity in mental health professions. Her work emphasizes practical applications of counseling theory, bridging clinical practice with community needs.
Notable contributions include exploring pedophile identity dynamics (2024), patient experiences in acute care (2017), and care transition challenges for older adults (2017). She actively pursues EMDR Trainer certification and maintains clinical practice alongside academic roles.
