Denis Byrne

Denis Byrne is a Professor at the Institute for Culture and Society, Western Sydney University. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy from the Australian National University. His research focuses on heritage studies, migration, queer cultures, and the Anthropocene, emphasizing transnational perspectives and challenging Eurocentric approaches to heritage practice. Byrne’s work explores topics such as migrant-built heritage corridors, queer heritage, coastal reclamations, and the intersection of popular religion with conservation efforts in Asia.

Key projects include the China-Australia Heritage Corridor and heritage-making among recent migrants in Parramatta. His publications include books like Counterheritage and The Heritage Corridor, which advocate for transnational and culturally inclusive heritage frameworks. Byrne has contributed to debates on environmental humanities, the material agency of heritage objects, and the decolonization of heritage practices.
