Dr. Delma Byrne is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at Maynooth University, within the Faculty of Social Sciences. Her research focuses on social stratification, the sociology of education, and inequalities related to child poverty, gender, social class, race/ethnicity, disability, and educational disadvantage. She holds a PhD in Educational Sociology from the University of Edinburgh and has held research roles at the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI), Dublin.
Her work examines education systems, youth transitions, graduate labor markets, and the intersection of policy with social inequality. She employs mixed-methods approaches, using datasets like the European Labour Force Survey, EU-SILC, and longitudinal Irish data such as 'Growing Up in Ireland.' Recent projects include evaluating child poverty research ethics, analyzing shadow education uptake in Ireland, and studying AI's role in education.
Dr. Byrne has led multiple research initiatives, including the National Evaluation of the DARE/HEAR schemes for higher education access and studies on lone parents' educational barriers. She has authored/co-authored books like Parental Involvement Across European Education Systems (2020) and peer-reviewed articles in journals such as British Journal of Educational Studies and American Behavioral Scientist.
Her professional roles include serving as President of the Educational Studies Association of Ireland (2014–2017), membership in the European Sociological Association’s Sociology of Education Network, and advisory roles in policy initiatives like the Irish Research Council’s Coalesce project. She advises on education policy, inequality reduction, and child welfare at national and international levels.
