Dr. Delisa G. Brown is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). She holds a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Howard University (2018) and completed her clinical psychology internship and an NIAAA-funded postdoctoral fellowship at MUSC (2017–2020). Her research focuses on mental health disparities, trauma, and substance use disorders among African American adults, particularly examining how stressors like discrimination and trauma impact treatment outcomes.
Key research areas include: (1) culturally tailored treatments for substance use disorders, (2) comorbid PTSD and alcohol use disorder among veterans, and (3) systemic health disparities in youth mental health. Dr. Brown is funded by an NIAAA Career Development Award (K23) to study stressors and alcohol use disorder, and a VA Supplement to evaluate psychosocial pain treatments for African American veterans.
Her interdisciplinary collaborations include work on school-based interventions to reduce health disparities and innovative technology-enhanced therapies for PTSD. She is actively involved in clinical trials, including studies on oxytocin and N-acetylcysteine for co-occurring disorders. Dr. Brown’s work emphasizes translating research into evidence-based practices that address racial inequities in mental health care.
