Declan Hill, D.Phil., serves as an Associate Professor in the Division of Government and Public Service within the Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences at the University of New Haven. He is a renowned expert on match-fixing and corruption in international sports, with significant contributions to understanding the intersection of organized crime, gambling, and sports integrity. Dr. Hill will be on sabbatical during the 2025-26 Academic Year but remains available for media appearances.
Dr. Hill earned his D.Phil. from Oxford University as a Chevening Scholar in 2008 and completed his B.A. at the University of Toronto. His academic credentials support his extensive field research on sports corruption, particularly his groundbreaking work on match-fixing networks.
Hill's research focuses on the dangerous convergence of globalized gambling markets and sports corruption, with particular emphasis on match-fixing mechanisms, organized crime networks, and integrity threats to professional sports. His work examines how informal governance structures operate outside formal government channels, analyzing power dynamics within sports organizations. He employs both qualitative and quantitative research methods, adapting his approach to fit the specific research questions rather than forcing topics to match preferred methodologies.
His publications reveal a consistent focus on the structural vulnerabilities within sports systems that enable corruption, with particular attention to risk assessment frameworks for identifying sports most susceptible to match-fixing. Hill's work demonstrates how globalization of gambling markets has created unprecedented threats to sports integrity, with sophisticated criminal organizations operating across international boundaries.
As director of the University of New Haven's Sports Integrity Center, Hill has established the inaugural Noble Purpose for Sports Integrity Award, recognizing outstanding contributions to sports integrity. His center serves as a hub for research, education, and policy development related to sports corruption prevention.
Hill actively engages with students through his Crime Waves podcast, where he interviews primary sources including prosecutors, criminals, journalists, and law enforcement officials. This practical application of his research provides students with direct exposure to real-world investigations and corruption cases. His work extends beyond academia into public policy, where he frequently advises governments and sports organizations on integrity issues.
Through the Sports Integrity Graduate Certification program, Hill has created educational opportunities focused on combating corruption, doping, abuse, and match-fixing in the sports world. His leadership connects academic research with practical anti-corruption measures, bridging the gap between theory and practice in sports integrity.
