Professor Debra Jones is the Head of the Rural Clinical School (Broken Hill) at the University of Sydney's Faculty of Medicine and Health. She holds affiliations with the Sydney Policy Lab and the Charles Perkins Centre. Her research focuses on rural health care, nursing education, public health advocacy, and addressing health inequities through interprofessional collaboration and policy development.
Her work emphasizes innovations in rural nursing education, such as longitudinal integrated placements and extended rural clinical placements. She also investigates strategies to strengthen cross-sector collaborations for student learning in remote areas, aiming to reduce workforce shortages while prioritizing student retention.
Professor Jones has secured grants including the 2023 Sydney Policy Lab/Research for Policy Impact Award for developing place-based cultural protocols for First Nations peoples. Her publications highlight themes of health equity in vulnerable populations, particularly through school-based nurse advocacy roles and systemic health policy reforms.
