Debra Fried is an Associate Professor (Retired) in the Department of Literatures in English at Cornell University. Her teaching spans English and American literature with a focus on poetry, including courses on poetic meter, Transcendentalism, and film adaptations of Henry James. Her research explores 19th-century American poetics, lyric theory, and intersections between poetry and visual arts.
Key research interests include Emily Dickinson, Henry David Thoreau, and the historical evolution of poetic commentary. Current work examines the concept of 'detail' in poetry and its valuation across literary history. She has contributed to volumes such as On Puns and Tradition and the Poetics of Self in Nineteenth-Century Women’s Poetry, reflecting her engagement with neoclassical traditions and sociolinguistic approaches.
Her interdisciplinary focus bridges literary studies with film theory, particularly classic American cinema. Fried’s scholarship emphasizes the interplay between poetic form, historical context, and aesthetic practices.
