Debra Carney is a University Distinguished Teaching Professor in Applied Mathematics and Statistics at Colorado School of Mines, and currently serves as Associate Dean for Earth and Society Programs. She holds a PhD in Mathematics from the University of Maryland (1998) and a BS in Mathematics from the University of Vermont (1991). Her research focuses on the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning and Mathematical Logic, emphasizing pedagogical innovation in undergraduate STEM education.
Dr. Carney leads initiatives to improve mathematics education through grants like the NSF-funded Inquiry-Orientated Dynamical Systems project (2024-2027). Her publications analyze pandemic-era calculus course redesign, team-based linear algebra instruction, and professional development for women in mathematics. She has received numerous teaching awards including the 2023 University Distinguished Teaching Professorship.
Active in academic service, she co-advises the Society for Women in Mathematics and chairs committees on effective teaching implementation. Her work bridges educational research with practical classroom strategies to enhance student success.
