Deborah Welsh is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, within the College of Arts & Sciences. She leads the Transitions Across the Lifespan Lab (TALL), focusing on adolescent and emerging adult development, particularly in romantic relationships and life transitions such as college entry and retirement.
Research Interests: Her work centers on life transitions, romantic relationships, gender, family dynamics, and emerging adulthood. She investigates how developmental milestones impact psychological, academic, and relational functioning. Her research integrates observational, longitudinal, and theoretical frameworks to understand adolescent sexuality, emotional regulation, breakup recovery, and trust in relationships.
The analysis of her recent publications reveals a consistent focus on the emotional and relational challenges during adolescence and early adulthood. Themes include rejection sensitivity, self-silencing, infidelity perceptions, and the health implications of sexual behavior. Her interdisciplinary approach spans developmental, clinical, and social psychology, with strong emphasis on dyadic and longitudinal methods.
