Deborah Siegele is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Texas A&M University. She joined the department in 1992 and holds affiliations with the American Society of Microbiology, Genetics Society of America, and Sigma Xi Research. Her research focuses on developing computational tools to enhance data reusability in microbiology through ontology-based biocuration. Key projects include the Ontology for Microbial Phenotypes (OMP) and contributions to the Gene Ontology Consortium.
Education: B.A. in Biochemistry (Northwestern University, 1976), Ph.D. in Molecular Biology (University of Wisconsin-Madison, 1989), followed by postdoctoral research at Harvard Medical School.
Research emphasizes structured data annotation using controlled vocabularies like ontologies, enabling systematic analysis of microbial phenotypes and genotypes. Her work addresses challenges in data integration across species, particularly for bacteria and archaea, through projects like OMP and the Evidence & Conclusion Ontology (ECO). Recent studies explore antibiotic resistance mechanisms and high-throughput genomic data analysis.
Laboratory: Located in Biological Sciences Building West, Room 233. Research team collaborates with institutions like the University of Maryland School of Medicine to advance microbial data standards.
