Deborah Pichler is a Professor at Gallaudet University's School of Language, Education, and Culture, affiliated with the Center for Continuing Education. She holds a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Connecticut (2001), an MA in Linguistics (1998), and dual B.A./B.S. degrees in French and Biology from Pennsylvania State University (1995). Her research focuses on bilingualism, sign language acquisition, and deaf education, with expertise in bimodal bilingualism and language deprivation issues.
Her education spans linguistics and biological sciences, reflecting her interdisciplinary approach. Key research areas include bimodal bilingual development in deaf children, sign language pedagogy, and the sociopolitical implications of language rights for deaf communities. Recent work highlights translanguaging practices and equitable education strategies for deaf children with hearing parents.
Dr. Pichler’s articles emphasize visual communication strategies, language synthesis in bilinguals, and policy advocacy for sign language access. Notable contributions include the Family ASL project and the SLAAASh corpus initiative. Awards include the 2014 Outstanding Graduate Faculty Award and a 2009 Fulbright Fellowship.
She advises numerous graduate students and leads initiatives like the SLAAASh project (2015-2020), focusing on sign language acquisition data sharing. Her work bridges linguistic theory with practical applications in education and policy.
