Deborah Lutz is a Professor and Morton Endowed Chair at the University of Louisville, specializing in Victorian literature, material culture, and gender studies. Her research bridges literary analysis with historical artifacts, exploring themes like intimacy, death, and creative labor. She holds a PhD from the Graduate Center, CUNY.
Her scholarship spans award-winning books including Victorian Paper Art and Craft (Oxford UP, 2022), analyzing how writers interacted with physical materials, and The Brontë Cabinet (Norton, 2015), which explores family dynamics through objects. Her work has been recognized with prestigious fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and NEH.
Dr. Lutz edits major critical editions of classics like Jane Eyre and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and is currently writing a biography of Emily Brontë. Her media engagements include interviews with the New York Times and History Channel, showcasing her ability to connect academic research with public interest.
