Professor Deborah Fitzsimmons holds a Personal Chair and serves as Academic Director of Swansea Centre for Health Economics (SCHE) and Joint Director of Health and Care Economics Cymru at Swansea University. She is a registered nurse with a PhD in Quality of Life/Patient Reported Outcome Measurement (PROMs) from the University of Southampton (2000) and a Postdoctoral Award from the Department of Health (2002). Her research focuses on health economics, PROMs, and chronic conditions such as cancer, asthma, multiple sclerosis, and diabetes.
She is an active member of the EORTC Quality of Life Group and volunteers as a Trustee for Tenovus Cancer Care. Teaching includes health economics and research methods across postgraduate programs, including leadership of the Population Health Interdisciplinary Degree module for medical students.
Her research spans economic evaluations, clinical trial methodologies, and healthcare policy. Key collaborations include studies on multiple sclerosis diagnosis support, diabetes prevention programs, and antibiotic stewardship strategies.
Professor Fitzsimmons has supervised over 12 PhD/Professional Doctorate students and contributed to major trials like the PACE and SAILOR studies. Her work emphasizes translating research into practical healthcare solutions.
