Deborah Clarke is a Professor of English and Senior Associate Dean of Faculty at Arizona State University (ASU), affiliated with both the Department of English (College of Liberal Arts and Sciences) and the School of Medicine and Advanced Medical Engineering. She joined ASU in 2008 after 20 years at Penn State University.
- Education: Ph.D. in English from Yale University, B.A. in English from the University of Michigan
Her research focuses on twentieth-century American fiction, particularly William Faulkner and women writers, with an emphasis on
• Automobile culture in literature
• Modernist domesticity and its destabilizing role
• Gender, technology, and mobility
• Cultural politics of the Great Depression and Southern modernity
Her publications analyze intersections of gender, technology, and domesticity in American literature. She has delivered lectures globally, including at the University of Ghent and Sichuan University, on topics like automotive maternity and women's relationships with cars.
- Scientific Awards: Beatrice Bain Research Fellowship (UC Berkeley)
Her grants include support from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the Penn State Institute for the Arts and Humanities. She has served as President of the Society for the Study of American Women Writers and Vice President of The Faulkner Society.
