Debbie Shawcross is a Clinical Professor of Hepatology and Chronic Liver Failure at the Institute of Liver Studies, King’s College London. She serves as a Consultant Hepatologist at King’s Liver Unit, focusing on hepatic encephalopathy, liver failure syndromes, and cirrhosis complications.

Her research characterizes the immunobiology of chronic liver failure, emphasizing the gut-liver-brain axis and gut microbiome’s role in immune dysfunction, inflammation, and encephalopathy. She leads clinical trials in faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) across Europe, including the NIHR-funded PROMISE Trial (FMT for cirrhosis).
