Debbie Bower is an Associate Professor in Zoology and Ecology at the School of Environmental and Rural Science, University of New England. She leads the Lab of Applied Zoology and Ecosystem Restoration (LAZER), focusing on invasive species management and conservation of threatened taxa, particularly amphibians and freshwater turtles.
Her research spans applied ecology, freshwater systems, and conservation biology, with fieldwork in the Murray Darling Basin, north Queensland savannas, and Papua New Guinea rainforest streams. Key themes include salinisation effects on turtles, amphibian disease dynamics, and habitat restoration.
Scientific awards include the 2023 Churchill Fellowship, 2023 Eureka Prize, and 2018 Homeward Bound Women in Science. Supervision experience includes PhD/MSc students working on freshwater turtle physiology, amphibian conservation, and invasive species impacts.
