Debbie Aitken is an Associate Professor of Medical Education at the University of Oxford’s Department of Education. She is Co-Chair of the Equity, Diversity and Belonging (EDB) Committee, a Fellow of Harris Manchester College, and a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (PFHEA). Her career spans leadership roles at Edinburgh Medical School, the Royal College of Physicians of London, and international engagement in Medical Education through institutions in Cambodia, Hong Kong, and Paris.

Debbie’s research focuses on equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in Medical Education, neurodiversity, LGBTQIA+ issues, anti-racism, and generational differences. Her work explores how diverse role models and inclusive curricula enhance belonging and education equity. She applies simulation-based and virtual reality (VR) methods to address microaggressions and skill development in clinical settings.
Her recent publications emphasize EDI frameworks, VR training, and intersectional approaches to medical student support. Awards include the NHS Education Scotland Medical Education Award for EDI and the ASME Travelling Fellowship, which facilitated collaboration with Yale, Harvard, and Weill Cornell. She supervises doctoral students in Equity, Diversity, and Belonging, Anti-Racism, and Medical Education research.
