Dr. Debasish Chattopadhyay is a Professor in the School of Medicine - Medicine - Infectious Diseases at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He holds joint appointments across multiple departments including Microbiology, Chemistry, Cell/Developmental/Integrative Biology, and has affiliations with prestigious centers like the O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Comprehensive Diabetes Center. His academic journey includes a BS in Chemistry and MS in Biochemistry from Calcutta University, India, followed by a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Jadavpur University (1989). Postdoctoral research at the Upjohn Company focused on antiretroviral drug discovery.
Research Interests: His work centers on structural biology and protein function analysis, targeting pathogens such as malaria, Chagas' disease, and bacterial infections. Techniques include biophysical and biochemical methods to inform drug and vaccine development. Key focuses include RXR rexinoids for cancer chemoprevention and structural-based antimalarial vaccines.
Grants & Activities: Dr. Chattopadhyay has led or contributed to numerous grants, including NIH-funded projects on cancer chemoprevention, antimalarial vaccine design, and bacterial colonization mechanisms. He has advised doctoral students in structural biology and infectious diseases. Teaching roles include microbiology laboratories and specialized courses in structural biology.
