Deb Thompson serves as Professor in the Department of Exercise and Sports Science at Spring Arbor University while concurrently holding the position of head softball coach since 1987. She also instructs CORE 100 courses and leads cross-cultural educational trips internationally, maintaining an active dual role in academia and athletics with over 800 career victories and fifth place among NAIA's winningest active coaches.
Her professional expertise spans Sports Science, Softball Coaching, Exercise Physiology, Athletic Training, Sports Education, and Cross-Cultural Sports, integrating athletic performance with academic instruction to develop student-athletes holistically both on and off the field.
Thompson's distinguished recognition includes:
- NFCA Regional Coach of the Year (1996, 1998, 2004)
- NCCAA Regional Coach of the Year (9 occasions)
- NCCAA National Coach of the Year (2005)
- Spring Arbor University Athletics Hall of Fame (2002)
- Blissfield High School Hall of Fame (2005)
As an educator-coach, she mentors student-athletes through academic coursework and athletic development while organizing international cross-cultural experiences that broaden educational perspectives beyond traditional classroom settings.
Thompson directs the university's softball program to national prominence including the 2005 NCCAA championship, leveraging her background as a former standout pitcher at SAU to build a legacy of excellence in competitive athletics and character development across multiple generations of student-athletes.
