Deanna McDanel

Dr. Deanna McDanel is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy and a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Ambulatory Care at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC). Her dual role combines academic teaching, clinical practice, and residency program leadership. She earned her PharmD from the University of Iowa in 2001 and completed a specialized residency in Primary Care Pharmacy (2002). She holds certifications as a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist (BCPS) since 2004 and Board Certified Ambulatory Care Pharmacist (BCACP) since 2012.

Dr. McDanel's research focuses on anticoagulation management and drug allergy evaluation, with particular emphasis on improving antibiotic stewardship, reducing unnecessary drug allergy labels, and enhancing pharmacist-led clinical services. Her work bridges ambulatory care, diabetes management, and surgical antibiotic prophylaxis optimization. She leads the UIHC PGY2 Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Residency Program, fostering specialized training for future clinical pharmacy leaders.
