Noureddine Melikechi is the Dean of the Kennedy College of Sciences and a Professor at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. His academic journey includes roles as Chair of the Department of Physics, Dean of the College of Mathematics at Delaware State University, and founding director of the Optical Science Center for Applied Research. He holds a D.Phil. in Physics from the University of Sussex (1987) and earlier degrees from Houari Boumediene University in Algeria.
Research Interests: Focus on laser spectroscopy of complex systems, including early cancer detection via LIBS, Mars mission data analysis (Curiosity and Mars 2020), and isotopic identification. His work bridges fundamental physics with applications in biomedicine and planetary science.
Publications: Over 100 peer-reviewed articles in journals like Spectrochimica Acta, Astrobiology, and the Journal of Geophysical Research. Key themes include LIBS applications in cancer biomarkers, Martian geochemistry, and instrument calibration.
Awards: Multiple fellowships (AAAS, Optical Society), NASA Group Achievement Award (2013), and recognition for contributions to international science and education.
Leadership: Secured >$25M in federal funding at Delaware State University, leading to a dedicated optics research building. Current advisory roles include the North American Society for LIBS and Algerian-American Science Council.
Lab Facilities: Located in Wanalancit Mills, equipped for LIBS, Raman spectroscopy, and advanced computational resources through the Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center.
