Dean Callaghan

Dr. Dean Callaghan is a Lecturer and Director of the Engineering Centre of Research and Enterprise (engCORE) at South East Technological University (SETU). Previously, he held roles at TU Dublin and Institute of Technology Carlow, focusing on engineering education and research. His expertise spans manufacturing processes, materials science, and embedded sensing technologies, particularly in Additive Manufacturing, Cold Spray, and optical sensing for medical devices.

Dr. Callaghan holds a BEng (1st Class Honors) and PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Technological University Dublin. His research integrates advanced manufacturing techniques with embedded sensing to enhance strain, fatigue, and temperature monitoring in components. He has published extensively on topics including battery thermal management, phase change materials (PCM), CFD analysis, and hypersonic flow dynamics.

His work contributes to sustainable technologies aligned with UN SDGs, such as improving battery efficiency in electric vehicles and optimizing thermal systems. Dr. Callaghan actively participates in international conferences and collaborates on projects addressing aerospace propulsion, cold spray nozzle design, and building thermal management.

As Director of engCORE, he drives innovation in engineering research and enterprise. He is currently accepting PhD students and has supervised studies on topics like modular PCM structures and aerospike nozzle applications.
