Dawn Scarfe is an Associate Lecturer for BA (Hons) Sound Arts at London College of Communication, where she explores fragile connections between people, places, and sound through experimental devices like 'bivvy broadcasts' and 'listening glasses'. Her practice bridges artistic creation, ecological awareness, and community engagement.
Her academic credentials include:
- PhD in Sonic Arts from Goldsmiths University of London
- MMus in Composition from Goldsmiths University of London
- BA in Fine Art from Oxford Brookes University
Scarfe's research centers on sound ecology and real-time broadcasting, with key projects including SoundCamp—an annual international festival examining sound and ecology at Stave Hill, Rotherhithe—and Reveil, a crowd-sourced 24-hour global daybreak sound broadcast. Her work integrates installation art, radio art, and social practice, often involving collaborative listening frameworks and environmental sensitivity.
She has secured residencies through the 'Embedded' programme with Sound and Music and Forestry Commission England, and at MoKS Centre for Art and Social Practice in Estonia. Educational workshops developed with SLG’s Art Assassins, School of Noise (Hackney), and Ruskin School of Art demonstrate her commitment to community-based sound education and youth outreach.
As co-curator of SoundCamp and Reveil, Scarfe leads international collectives fostering global participation in ecological sound practices. These projects involve distributed networks of artists and listeners, emphasizing live transmission and environmental interconnectedness across time zones.
