Dawn L Carpenter is an Assistant Professor of Nursing at UMass Chan Medical School, where she serves as Director of the Adult-Gerontology Acute/Critical Care Nurse Practitioner Track within the Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing. With over 25 years of combined experience as a nurse, Nurse Practitioner, and faculty member, Dr. Carpenter maintains active clinical practice as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner in the surgical intensive care units at UMass Memorial Medical Center. She is nationally recognized for her contributions to critical care nursing education and practice, with expertise spanning critical care education, simulation technology applications, and sepsis management.

She has mentored numerous nursing students throughout her career and developed innovative curriculum for critical care nursing education, including the first Advanced Critical Care for Advance Practice Nurse Courses.
Dr. Carpenter actively collaborates with interdisciplinary teams across healthcare systems, as evidenced by her work with seven US health systems on tele-ICU provider roles. Her clinical practice in surgical intensive care units informs her educational approaches, creating a valuable feedback loop between classroom instruction and real-world patient care. She maintains strong connections with professional organizations that advance critical care nursing practice and education standards nationally.
