Dawn Harris is an Instructor of Voice and Resident Director of Lyric Theatre @ Illinois at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where she also directs the ISYM Musical Theatre Camp. Previously, she held roles as Director of Opera and Assistant Professor of Voice at DePauw University, and Voice and Opera faculty at Illinois Wesleyan University. Her expertise spans opera, operetta, and musical theatre performance and direction, with a specialization in Gilbert and Sullivan works. She has performed and directed across renowned institutions including Ohio Light Opera, Sinfonia da Camera, and the Grant Park Music Festival.
Education: BM and MM in Vocal Performance from Kent State University, with doctoral studies in vocal performance and opera at Louisiana State University. Major mentors include James F. Stuart and Martina Arroyo.
Research interests focus on interpreting 19th–20th century operetta and musical theatre, with notable works directed including The Mikado, Pirates of Penzance, and Man of La Mancha. She has pioneered Gilbert and Sullivan festivals and collaborated on new operas like Jeremy Gill’s Letters from Quebec to Providence in the Rain and Sky Macklay’s The Surrogate.
As a director, she emphasizes historical authenticity and contemporary reinterpretations, blending performance with academic rigor. Her choreography and stage direction have been showcased nationally, including at the National Opera Association Convention. She remains active in both professional and academic theatre circuits, bridging classical and modern performance traditions.
