Dawn Farmer serves as an Associate Professor and Coordinator of Music Education at Augustana College, where she is the instrumental music specialist and advises ACME, the Augustana College Music Education pre-professional club. She holds leadership roles as President of the Music Teacher Education Division of the Illinois Music Education Association (ILMEA) and Past National President of Tau Beta Sigma, the National Band Sorority.
Dr. Farmer's educational background includes:
- Bachelor of Music Education (B.M.E.) from the University of Arizona
- Master of Arts (M.A.) from the University of Maryland
- Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) from Arizona State University
Her research program centers on urban music education, teacher preparation, women in music and band, discourse analysis, and social justice. She actively disseminates findings through national and international conference presentations and workshops for college students on peer leadership and effective communication.
Dr. Farmer founded the Manhattan Beach Elementary Schools Honor Band and Honor Orchestra, which commissioned Sean O'Loughlin's "Enchanted Village" and earned "Esprit de Corps" awards and Superior ratings. Her student mentorship extends to Tri-M music honor society chapters and a CNAfME chapter at Saint Mary's College recognized on NAfME's national platforms.
She contributes scholarly service as an Editorial Board member for Contributions to Music Education and maintains active membership in NAfME and WBDI. Outside academia, she volunteers with rescue dog organizations, participates in Mensa, and enjoys reading, board games, and video games.
