David Zwart is an Associate Professor of History and Assistant Chair in the History Department at Grand Valley State University. His academic background includes a Ph.D. in History from Western Michigan University (2012), M.A. from California State University, Fresno (2004), and B.A. from Dordt College (1999). His research focuses on the intersection of religion, ethnicity, and commemoration in Dutch-American communities, particularly how ethno-religious identity was constructed through institutional commemorations. He also explores historical thinking in social studies education and pre-service teacher preparation.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on American History, Social Studies Strategies, and Field Supervision. His publications analyze topics such as disciplinary literacy in world history, Dutch-American educational practices, and rural Protestant congregations' role in mid-20th century Midwest communities. His work highlights themes of cultural memory, transnational identity, and pedagogical innovation in history education.
Zwart’s research demonstrates a commitment to understanding marginalized historical narratives and improving historical literacy in educational settings. He currently holds no listed scientific awards but contributes actively to academic discourse through peer-reviewed journals.
