Dr. David Worthington is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Management Science at Lancaster University Management School, Lancaster University. He holds a BSc from Birmingham, an MSc, and a PhD from the University of Reading. His research focuses on healthcare management applications of operational research, including patient flow modeling, queue systems optimization, and data mining. Specific interests include time-dependent queue systems in healthcare (e.g., A&E departments, appointment systems) and call centers.
His research groups include the Centre for Health Futures, STOR-i Centre for Doctoral Training, and Health Systems Simulation. He has advised PhD student Graham Burgess and contributed to projects like the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration North West Coast (2019–2026) and STOR-i's airline operations simulation project (2016–2020). He actively participates in conferences such as OR53, INFORMS Healthcare, and EURO2010, and serves as a peer reviewer for journals including Journal of Simulation and Health Care Management Science.
He also engages in consultancy, such as work with Lancashire Fire & Rescue Service, and explores deterministic optimization and simulation in healthcare and operational contexts.
