David Wollborn

Dr David Wollborn serves as a Senior Engineer at the Food Engineering Team within the Food Program (A&F) at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO). His work focuses on advancing precision fermentation technologies aligned with CSIRO's Future Protein Mission and Agriculture & Food Business Unit strategic objectives.

Dr Wollborn earned his Master of Science in Molecular Biotechnology from Bielefeld University in 2016, followed by a PhD in Biochemical Engineering from RWTH Aachen University in 2022. His doctoral research, titled 'Bioprocess Development for Recombinant Protein Production in Pichia pastoris at Different Scales,' successfully scaled processes to 300 L in collaboration with Fraunhofer institute and CDMOs.

His research expertise spans precision fermentation systems, bioprocess scale-up methodologies, and microbial host optimization. Specializing in yeast (particularly Pichia pastoris) and bacterial systems, he integrates small-scale screening with online monitoring technology and large-scale fermentation using 100 L stainless steel systems. His analytical proficiency includes HPLC, FPLC, SEC, and colorimetric assays for comprehensive process characterization and modeling.

Dr Wollborn's notable recognition includes the Gold Medal Award from the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition in 2014.
