Ilya Tolstorukov, PhD, DSc, is a Research Professor at the Keck Graduate Institute (KGI) of Applied Life Sciences, affiliated with the Riggs School. He previously held roles as a researcher and Head of the Genetics of Methylotrophic Yeasts Section at VNIIGenetika (Moscow, Russia), and conducted visiting research at NIH (USA), University of Groningen (Netherlands), and Osaka University (Japan). His expertise focuses on protein expression in yeast systems, particularly Pichia pastoris, and biotechnological applications of methylotrophic yeasts.
Education includes a PhD and DSc in Genetics, with foundational work on yeast genetics and molecular biology. His research integrates classical genetics with modern biotechnology, emphasizing protein production for therapeutics and industrial applications.
Key research interests include engineering yeast strains for monoclonal antibodies, feed enzymes, and bioproducts. His work has advanced Pichia pastoris as a leading protein expression platform, contributing to therapies like Lundbeck’s Viepty (migraine treatment). Collaborations with James Cregg led to patented methods for heteromultimeric polypeptide synthesis and Pichia pastoris promoters.
Notable achievements include co-founding BioGrammatics, Inc., and developing genetically defined yeast strains critical for industrial biotechnology. His contributions bridge fundamental yeast genetics with applied research in biopharmaceuticals and enzyme production.
