Dr. David Williams is the Diane Walker & Raffi Markarian Entrepreneurship Professor and William B. Stokely Distinguished Scholar at the University of Tennessee. He holds a Ph.D. in Entrepreneurship and Strategic Management from Georgia State University, an MBA in International Business from DePaul University, and a BA in International Studies from Millikin University. His research focuses on cognitive processes underlying entrepreneurial decision-making, firm growth, profitability, and survival, with special emphasis on opportunity evaluation, international entrepreneurship, and identity dynamics. He has taught Entrepreneurship, Strategic Management, and International Business at the University of Tennessee, Georgia State University, and Bradley University.
His research interests span cognitive biases in entrepreneurial decisions, internationalization strategies, and experimental methods. Notable contributions include studies on temporal enactment in venture outcomes, meta-analyses of entrepreneurial stress impacts, and frameworks for opportunity evaluation. Dr. Williams has received the William B. Stokely Distinguished Scholar award, recognizing his academic contributions. His work bridges theory and practice, often addressing challenges faced by early-stage ventures and global expansion strategies.
Before his academic career, he served as a consultant with an international SBDC, aiding SMEs in international expansion. His interdisciplinary approach integrates insights from strategic management, psychology, and global business to advance entrepreneurship research. Current research trends include exploring the dark side of entrepreneurship, role transitions in growing ventures, and the interplay between identity and ownership structures.
