David Wareham

Dr. David Wareham is a Clinical Senior Lecturer in Microbiology at Queen Mary University of London's Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, holding an Honorary Consultant position in Microbiology at Barts Health, Newham University, and Homerton NHS Trusts. His work focuses on intensive care microbiology and combating antimicrobial resistance in Gram-negative pathogens.

His research spans antimicrobial resistance mechanisms, molecular epidemiology of nosocomial pathogens, and virulence studies of organisms like Acinetobacter baumannii, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, and carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae. Using genomics, molecular biology, and in-vivo models, his team investigates novel resistance determinants and antimicrobial combinations while maintaining strong clinical links through Barts Health NHS Trust's high-volume diagnostic laboratory.

Dr. Wareham serves as Associate Editor for 'BMC Infectious Diseases' since 2008 and chairs the Barts Antimicrobial Review Group. His research has been funded by industry partners including Astellas Pharma, Wyeth, and Astra Zeneca, alongside grants from the Royal Society and medical research foundations.

He supervises PhD students in areas including β-lactamases, molecular epidemiology, and Gram-negative sepsis, while teaching Clinical Microbiology across multiple programs including the BSc Biomedical Science, MSc Clinical Microbiology, and MB BS courses at Queen Mary.
