David W. Kennedy is the Manley O. Hudson Professor of Law and Faculty Director of the Institute for Global Law and Policy at Harvard Law School. He has held this position since joining the faculty in 1981. His academic work focuses on international law, global governance, legal theory, law and development, and European law, with interdisciplinary approaches incorporating sociology, economics, and history. Kennedy has extensive practical experience, including work with the United Nations, the Qatar Foundation, and private firms like Cleary Gottlieb. He has also served in leadership roles at Harvard, such as Chair of the Graduate Committee and Director of the European Law Research Center. His advisory roles include membership in the World Economic Forum’s Global Advisory Council and Foreign Advisor to Thailand’s Truth for Reconciliation Commission. His publications explore themes like global political economy and crisis governance.
Education: Ph.D. from the Fletcher School (Tufts University), J.D. from Harvard. Courses taught include Law and Political Economy and Law in Global Affairs (Fall 2025).
