Dr. David W. Johnson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at the University of New England's College of Osteopathic Medicine (COM). He is based at the Portland Campus for the Health Sciences. His contact information includes djohnson@une.edu and (207) 602-2403.
Dr. Johnson holds a Bachelors Degree from the University of Vermont, a Masters Degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and a Ph.D. from Virginia Tech. He completed post-doctoral training at Mt Sinai Medical Center (Pharmacology) under Dr. Joe Goldfarb and at Albany Medical College (Pharmacology and Neuroscience) under Dr. Stanley Glick.
His research focused on drugs of abuse, microdialysis techniques, and NMDA receptor roles in ischemic brain damage until 2004. Since then, he has transitioned to teaching roles, emphasizing renal physiology, reproductive physiology, and online medical physiology education. He authored two popular books: Feel 30 For the Next 50 Years (1998) and Medical Tests That Could Save Your Life (2004).
Collaborations include tagging sharks with the University of New England’s Marine Science Center. He holds a Coast Guard Charter Boat Captain’s license and maintains interdisciplinary connections between medical and marine sciences.
