Dr. David Volkin is the Ronald T. Borchardt Distinguished Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of Kansas (KU) School of Pharmacy. He co-founded the Vaccine Analytics and Formulation Center (VAFC), focusing on translating vaccine and biotherapeutic candidates into clinical trials with global partners. His work emphasizes stability challenges in biopharmaceuticals and vaccines, including formulation development for LMICs.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Biochemical Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
- B.A. in Chemistry, University of California, San Diego
Research Focus: Investigates physicochemical instability mechanisms in vaccines/biologics, developing analytical tools and formulations to enhance stability. Collaborates on projects like HPV vaccines (Gardasil), rotavirus (RotaTeq), and second-generation COVID-19 candidates. Specializes in low-cost formulations for developing nations.
Awards: Highlighted by the AAPS 2015 Research Achievement Award in Biotechnology.
Experience: 20+ years in industry (Merck, J&J) before academia, leading 50+ clinical candidates to trials, including approved vaccines and monoclonal antibodies. Holds 15 U.S. patents and authored ~220 publications.
Labs: Directs VAFC, collaborating with academia, biopharma, and non-profits to advance global health initiatives.
