Dr. David Torello is a Senior Lecturer in the G.W.W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology. His academic journey includes a Ph.D. and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Tech (2017 and 2013), and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from UC Berkeley (2008). He previously worked as a Mechanical Engineer at Garmin AT, focusing on avionics GPS components.
Dr. Torello specializes in nonlinear ultrasonics and nondestructive evaluation (NDE), with research on air-coupled piezoelectric receivers for material characterization. His work also spans atomic force microscopy (AFM) actuation using acoustic phenomena. He is a Woodruff School Teaching Fellow, emphasizing real-world problem-solving, hands-on learning, and student-centered environments in courses like mechanics (ME 2202, ME 3017) and the senior-level mechanical systems lab (ME 4056).
His research trends since 2011 highlight innovation in ultrasonic NDE techniques and AFM technologies, blending fundamental material science with engineering applications. Recent work (2015–2017) focuses on air-coupled sensors and nonlinear material property assessment.
- Awards: Woodruff School Teaching Fellow (2017), G.F. Amelio Fellowship (2016–2017), multiple first-place poster/paper awards in NDE and structural acoustics (2014–2016).
- Grants/Advising: No specific grants listed; focuses on curriculum development and lab instruction.
- Labs/Teams: Leads the senior mechanical systems laboratory (ME 4056) development and collaborates on NDE and AFM research teams.
