David Todd is a Professor at Sciences Po's Centre for History (CHSP), where he has been since 2021. He holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge and previously taught at Cambridge and King’s College London. His research focuses on French political economy, imperial history, and Mediterranean studies between 1750–1914.
Key research interests include the global economy's evolution, informal French imperialism, and the interplay between political economy and colonialism. Current projects involve a global history of political ideas in the Mediterranean and a book on global silk routes in the 19th century.
Teaching: Undergraduate courses on 19th-century political history and postgraduate courses on 'The political economy of empires, 1700–2000.'
Awards: Leverhulme Prize (2012), Gyorgy Ranki Prize (2023).
Leadership: Coordinator of the Centre for History and Economics in Paris (with Cambridge/Harvard) and Chair of the Rothschild Archive’s Academic Advisory Council.
Advising: Supervises PhD students including Lorenzo Bonomelli (Orléanist imperialism), Émilie Pasquier (Egyptian urban infrastructure), and Natalia Lanko (British Levant Company).
