David Taylor is a Professor of Art at the University of Arizona and serves as the Associate Dean, Faculty Affairs in the School of Art. His work interrogates the intersections of borders, politics, environmental conditions, and social systems, with a focus on the U.S.-Mexico borderlands.
- BFA from Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts
- MFA from the University of Oregon
Taylor’s research explores how borders amplify geopolitical tensions through documentary photography, spatial analysis, and conceptual art. His projects, such as Working the Line (2010) and Monuments: 276 Views of the United States – Mexico Border (2015), blend historical inquiry with contemporary critique. Recent work examines borderland industrialization and collaborative art practices.
Taylor’s publications and monographs analyze territoriality and migration, aligning with keywords in political geography, environmental art, and documentary photography. His 2020 essay in Places Journal continues this thematic focus.
- Guggenheim Fellowship (2008)
- Tucson Museum of Art Contemporary Art Society Prize (2023)
Taylor has received grants including the Arizona Commission for the Arts Research and Development Grant (2019). He actively contributes to the academic community, having chaired the Executive Director search for MOCA Tucson and served on advisory boards for the UA Confluencenter for Creative Inquiry and the Society for Photographic Education.
