David Stone is a Lecturer II in the Department of Classical Studies at the University of Michigan. His research spans fieldwork and library-based studies, focusing on urbanism, mortuary archaeology, and economic systems in the Roman Empire, particularly in North Africa and Greece. Stone directs the Field Survey for the Olynthos Project in Greece, which integrates excavation, geophysics, and surface survey.
- Ph.D. in Classical Studies, University of Michigan (1997)
Research Themes: Stone's work on Leptiminus (Lamta, Tunisia) established a methodology for urban biographies using GIS mapping and surface survey. His studies on burial mounds in North Africa challenge assumptions about isolation, demonstrating early Mediterranean integration. At Olynthos (Greece), he investigates urban profiles through geophysical surveys and household archaeology.
Recent publications focus on port structures in Mauretania Caesariensis, regional urban systems, and theoretical frameworks in Greek archaeology. Stone co-authored field guides for Mediterranean surface surveys and contributed to debates about Roman imperialism and indigenous state formation.
