معرفی
David Spence is a Professor in the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences at Macquarie University, where he is affiliated with the MQ Photonics Research Centre. He received his MPhys degree (1997) and DPhil (2001) from Oxford University, UK, and after two years as a Research Assistant at Oxford's Clarendon Laboratory, he joined Macquarie University in 2004, where he completed an ARC Research fellowship (APDF).
His research spans a wide range of laser and nonlinear optics, with experimental highlights including work with national-scale PW lasers to make XUV lasers, building 25 fs Raman lasers in the infrared and the first ultrafast cerium lasers in the ultraviolet, developing 22 ps Q-switched microchip lasers, and creating CW single longitudinal mode lasers using Raman-, polariton-, and Brillouin-scattering. His publications consistently demonstrate a strong link between experiments and supporting theory, using both numerical and analytic modeling, with theoretical contributions including an invited review of Raman theory and an analytic theory to model polariton THz lasers.
Professor Spence's recent publications show a strong focus on diamond Raman lasers, water temperature measurement using Raman LiDAR, and terahertz polariton lasers. His work demonstrates significant industry translation, with commercialized products including a device with Optos for retinal surgery and current IP licenses with Jenoptik GmbH and M Squared Lasers Ltd.
Among his professional recognitions is the Inter-Departmental Collaboration award from the [EX]plore Conference Organising Committee in December 2022.
Professor Spence has supervised 6 completed PhD students and currently has one active student. His graduates have pursued successful careers in high-tech industry (Renishaw PLC, UK, and Coherent Scotland, UK), science funding consultancy (forderbar GmbH), academia (Capital Normal University, Beijing), and research institutions (CERN, after positions at MIT and SLAC).
He is actively involved in multiple research projects including 'Directed energy concept based on fibre laser pumped diamond,' 'Precision frequency spectrum diagnostic for pulsed lasers,' 'The Ultimate Multimode Photonics Characterisation Tool,' and 'Diamond lasers for precision applications.' He serves as a Chief Investigator in the MQ Photonics Research Centre, collaborating with researchers across multiple disciplines.
