David Sobel serves as the Irwin and Marjorie Guttag Professor of Ethics and Political Philosophy at Syracuse University's College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Philosophy. His influential research explores connections between personal values and well-being, examining whether things are valuable because we favor them or possess independent value.
Research interests focus on:
- The subjective/objective distinction in well-being
- Defense of subjectivist approaches to value
- Hybrid theories of goodness
- Consequentialist ethics and demandingness objections
Recent work analyzes how objective theories attempt to incorporate subjective elements and develops robust hybrid accounts of well-being. Sobel's publications consistently engage with fundamental questions about value ontology and practical reasoning.
Honors include residential fellowships at Princeton's Rockefeller Center, All Souls College Oxford, and ANU. He co-edits the Oxford Studies in Political Philosophy series and maintains research collaborations exploring value theory foundations.
