David Smith is the Dean of the School of Accounting, Information Systems, and Supply Chain at RMIT University's College of Business and Law. Previously, he held professorial roles at the University of Queensland and Monash University. His research focuses on management control systems, particularly performance measurement in development and welfare NGOs, with over a decade of specialized work in this area. He has contributed to leading journals such as Accounting, Organizations and Society and has editorial experience, including former editorship of Behavioral Research in Accounting. He currently serves on editorial boards of ABDC A*-ranked journals and has held leadership roles in professional organizations like the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA). His work bridges academic rigor with practical applications in nonprofit and public sector governance.
Research interests include performance measurement systems in NGOs, strategic investment appraisal in mergers and acquisitions, and the intersection of technology and professional workflows. His recent projects explore accountability mechanisms in public services and innovative data uses in management accounting.
