David Skarbek is the Michael Targoff Professor of Political Economy and inaugural Director of Brown University's Center for Philosophy, Politics, and Economics. His research focuses on the political economy of institutions and criminal governance, particularly the informal rules governing prisons globally. He has authored two award-winning books: The Social Order of the Underworld (Oxford, 2014), which examines prison gangs in the U.S., and The Puzzle of Prison Order (Oxford, 2020), analyzing penal systems worldwide. His work appears in top journals like the American Political Science Review and has been widely featured in major media outlets.
