Dr. David Seymour is a Senior Lecturer at The City Law School, City St George's, University of London, where he has been teaching since September 2012. His academic background includes a law degree from the Polytechnic of the South Bank (1983-1986), an LLM from the London School of Economics (1989), and a PhD in Social and Critical Theory from Warwick University (2000).
His research spans multiple intersecting domains with a particular focus on Intellectual Property law, especially as it relates to art and music. His work in Law and the Arts demonstrates deep engagement with creative fields, while his scholarship in Legal Theory, Social-legal Theory, and Critical Legal Theory reveals a strong philosophical foundation. His publications consistently explore the intersections between law, cultural production, memory studies, and Jewish thought.
Dr. Seymour's recent publications show a trajectory moving from foundational work in critical legal theory and Holocaust studies toward contemporary applications in digital copyright, pandemic law, and political economy. His 2024 book review on Law and Visual Culture represents the cutting edge of his scholarly interests, while his 2022 and 2020 working papers address the legal implications of the COVID-19 pandemic. His enduring interest in antisemitism and Holocaust memory continues to inform his broader legal scholarship.
As a dedicated supervisor, Dr. Seymour currently serves as first supervisor for PhD students Julie Crutchley and Nataliya Hitsevich, whose thesis focuses on Intellectual Property Infringement on the Internet. He welcomes proposals in Intellectual Property (particularly Copyright), Law and the Arts, Jurisprudence, Social-Legal Studies, and Critical Theory.
Professionally, he serves on the Advisory Board of the Danube Memorial and co-edits the Routledge Glasshouse Series Nomokoi: Critical Legal Thinkers with Professor Peter Goodrich of Cardoza Law School. This series presents analyses of key critical theorists who have written on law and contributed significantly to the development of interdisciplinary legal studies.
