Professor David Sebag-Montefiore is an academic clinical oncologist at the University of Leeds and an honorary Clinical Oncologist at Leeds Cancer Centre, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. He is Clinical Director of the Leeds Clinical Trial Research Unit and leads the Leeds Radiotherapy Research Group at the Leeds Institute of Medicine at St James’s University Hospital. He holds the Audrey and Stanley Burton Chair of Clinical Oncology (2012) and was awarded an Honorary Chair in 2010.
Education: MB BS (1983, University of London), MRCP(UK) (1986), FRCR (1990), FRCP (1999). His research focuses on personalizing radiotherapy for gastrointestinal cancers, particularly rectal and anal cancers, with leadership roles in major trials like MRC CR07 and ARISTOTLE. He also chairs key committees including CTrad Proton Beam Clinical Trial Strategy Group and the NIH HTA Prioritisation Panel.
Research emphasizes adaptive clinical trial designs, precision radiotherapy techniques, and integrating patient-reported outcomes. He supervises students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, fostering future leaders in radiotherapy research through training programs.
Awards include the Rohan Williams Medal from the Royal College of Radiologists. His work has transformed clinical practice, such as the MRC CR07 trial which halved local recurrence rates in rectal cancer via combined radiotherapy and surgery.
