Dr. Ane Appelt is an Associate Professor at the School of Medicine, University of Leeds, Faculty of Medicine and Health. She is a clinical radiotherapy researcher with dual expertise in medical physics and clinical oncology, holding an honorary clinical position in the Department of Medical Physics at St James’s University Hospital. She also holds an honorary Associate Professorship in Radiobiology at the University of Southern Denmark.

Her research is centered on improving cancer patient outcomes through optimized and individualized radiotherapy strategies. She focuses on reirradiation, organ preservation, clinical trial design, and the application of data science and biostatistics in radiation oncology. She leads the multicentre, randomized dose-escalation trial OPTIMAL-RT for rectal cancer and contributes to over a dozen other clinical trials, advocating for clinically translatable innovations. Her work spans cancers including rectal, anal, and lung cancer, with a strong emphasis on technological advancements and quantitative modeling of treatment outcomes.
Dr. Appelt is affiliated with key research groups including the Radiotherapy Research Group and the Clinical Cancer Research Group at the Leeds Institute of Medical Research at St James's. She is a member of the European Society for Radiotherapy & Oncology (ESTRO) and the UK Clinical and Translational Radiotherapy Research Working Group (CTRad).
She maintains international collaborations, having held postdoctoral positions at Rigshospitalet, University of Copenhagen, and visiting researcher roles at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston.
Dr. Appelt supervises postgraduate research and welcomes PhD applicants interested in radiotherapy, clinical trials, and data-driven oncology research.
