David Schutter serves as a Professor in the Institute of Art within the School of Fine Arts at the Berlin University of the Arts (Universität der Künste Berlin). His studio is located at Hardenbergstrasse 33, Room 247, in Berlin-Charlottenburg. Schutter is an internationally recognized artist whose works were featured in documenta 14 (2017), notably for his investigation into the "Schwabingen Art Trove" and the Gurlitt Collection.
His artistic practice is characterized by highly complex painting techniques that merge conceptual depth with material innovation. Schutter's work demonstrates a profound dialogue with art history, particularly in the context of restitution and provenance of artworks looted during the Nazi era. This focus positions him at the intersection of contemporary art practice and historical research.
Throughout his career, Schutter has been honored with several prestigious awards:
- German Chancellor Fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (2005)
- Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome (2015/16)
- John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship (2018)
- Berlin Art Prize in the Fine Arts category, awarded by the Academy of Arts on behalf of the State of Berlin (2020)
At the Berlin University of the Arts, Professor Schutter teaches courses and mentors students, including employing student assistants such as Fynn Bornemeier in his studio or class. His academic role involves guiding emerging artists in the development of their practice within the vibrant context of Berlin's art scene.
