David Schneider is a Professor and Senior Associate Dean in the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Genetics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He holds appointments in the School of Medicine's O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center and the School of Dentistry's GC-CODED. Current roles include Interim Dean of the Graduate School and Vice Chair of his department. Schneider earned his Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and completed postdoctoral training at UC Irvine in Biological Chemistry.
His research focuses on mechanisms of gene expression regulation, particularly ribosomal RNA synthesis, using biochemical, genetic, and genomic approaches. He actively develops anti-cancer compounds targeting transcription processes. Over 20 years of NIH/NSF-funded research include grants such as 'Control of RNA Polymerase I Transcription' and 'RAPID: SARS-CoV-2 RNA Polymerase Mechanisms.'
Teaching emphasizes graduate/professional education through courses like GBS708 (Basic Genetics/Molecular Biology) and innovative mentorship programs like UAB PREP Scholars. He has advised over 370+ students through dissertation committees and lab rotations. Awards include UAB's top teaching honor (2019) and the Louise T. Chow Endowed Chair (2022).
